NAME: Siegfried
CANON: fate/Grand Order
CANON POINT: Post-Apocrypha event, he's also CRAU from
agoge and
duplicitynet
AGE: Well over 1600
BACKGROUND: Story and lore is here
CRAU: Siegfried's first game was Agoge, being hired by a rogue group named COST to rewrite time, in an effort to stop the future from becoming an eventual tyranny. Throughout his travels, he had to blend into the worlds he was taken to, and help to shift the timelines into something more favorable in general.
» Paris, French Revolution: His first event in which he was thrust into mid-mission with an objective to delay the death of King Louis XVI, by whatever possible means. He teamed up with Bucky Barnes and the two of them went after Jean-Paul Marat, forcing him into the sewers for his hideout and poisoning him lightly to make him confused and miss the committee meeting to decide the king's fate. However, despite this plan Marat had a backup speaker for him that went in his stead, prompting the favor towards killing the king early. The end result was a failure: Paris rioted and was utter chaos as the groups within COST were unable to alter the fact that the king had died without allowing the French to remake their government as they wished for.
» Gallipoli, World War I: Siegfried spent over a month within the trenches of Gallipoli, learning the hard way the struggles of modern warfare. He spent most of his time as a sniper, eyes trained towards noticing the smaller details in no-man's land keeping an eye out for incoming mortars. He struggled with helping others in the trench while trying to survive on his own, as he was without a Master and beginning to fade the longer he went without mana. This became worse when the Regency entered the field and made a weight within the air, forcing him to find someone to make a contract with him so he could keep living. His own attitude turned completely towards helping the team as a whole, going so far as to scold and reprimand those who easily put others in danger.
»Jhasch, Spider Realm: The mission was to keep the Regency from getting the original source of their time-travel materials to alter all the timelines. Here, Siegfried was under constant scrutiny simply because of his existence- he was magic, a male, and also royalty. All three were considered good traits to have if you were a female in this society; if you were male, it meant having to watch your back from being suddenly eaten. He had to act as a proud and ruthless soldier in front of many, prompting him to struggle with his own personality of being kind, turning it over in favor of threats and boasting. It was not easy. The group, despite their shortcomings and goings, managed to secure the source material for COST and also prevent the material from getting into the hands of the Regency.
» Lemuria, Where It Began: The last mission he was on, this one was made in dire straits. COST members were brought back to the time just before the Regency formed, using everything in their power to sway the public and the nobles to avoid advancing into a complete tyranny. Everything was in chaos as Jormungandr and Fafnir raged upon the outskirts of the city before eventually being swayed to the people's side. Overall, it was a success, and by revealing the scandal of the royal family before they were able to grab hold of the kingdom undoes all of the Regency as well as COST itself. In the last moments, Siegfried says goodbye to all who helped him to understand himself a little more.
Siegfried went through a canon update and then on to Duplicity, though at the time he did not retain his memories of Agoge.
» Tumenalia: Within the first few weeks of being in the city, Siegfried and everyone else were thrust into a typical celebration that was instigated by the locals, called Tumenalia. Anyone within the city itself was under the festival's aura of bringing out their "darker side" to participate for a week. During this time the entire city was plunged into parties, sex, violence, murder and other heavy themes. Siegfried in particular chased after Jeanne d'Arc Alter, noticing that she was causing problems in the Down and feeling that she was his responsibility to take care of. Confronting her led to a much worse fate for him, however- being the Dragon Witch, she could easily manipulate him and what he did, because of his being a half-dragon. She planned to fully take advantage of him and use him as much as she wanted. In a last-ditch effort to maintain his sanity and protect his own mind, Duplicity and Tumenalia gave form to what is referred to as his "dragon half," and he rebelled against Jeanne in retaliation.
His dragon has only been forced out one other time, and it was not by choice nor received well from either of them. To this day, he still has this "other half" and fears it more than anything else, convinced he's a monster and is an even worse person as a result.
» Fort Harmony: A few months later, all characters in the game had their apartments raided, powers nullified, and were bound and bagged into a plain van that drove them out of the city. After what felt like hours, they arrived at an isolated camp that was called Fort Harmony, and was meant to be used to promote the proper usage of their assigned roles. They were handed uniforms, assigned schedules, and both roles had certain places they could only be together, as well as places they were forced to be separated.
Midway through the month that they ended up staying there, more and more guards were being swapped out for another, and it came to a head when the guards brought everyone into the main square for a public announcement. The guards explained they were from a neighboring city, Veracity, and that they were going to show what happens to those who do not obey their roles in Veracity.
That was when the guards publicly executed innocent people in front of the entire group within Fort Harmony.
Chaos broke out, and Siegfried had to be talked down by three people from throwing himself into the fray that was before him. It was only after some of the captives from Veracity caused an explosion within the fort, that he made his escape along with everyone else. Needless to say, Siegfried does not trust anything LIES corporation says nor promotes in their city since.
PERSONALITY:
Selfless, gentle, steadfast.
» One of the greatest and most prominent factors about Siegfried is his desire to help. Despite being a prince, he left the court to pursue a life as a knight, aiding whomever he could find.
» He is the epitome of a gentle giant- while his exterior looks intimidating and his presence can be described as nothing short of a threat, his quietness and his kindness break through to prove otherwise. This has been especially true since he's become half-dragon.
» His strongest belief is that because he was immortal because of killing Fafnir and bathing in his blood, that any task given to him should be something he could do, regardless of what it was.
» He led armies into battle and was the voice of reason for many men who listened. Soldiers would hearken to his figure as a stalwart hero who always helped whoever asked of him. Siegfried was a leader in both strategy and warfare- he knew how to defeat armies single-handedly, as well as guide Xanten's own military to victory.
Stubborn.
» Even if he's told he shouldn't do something- if Siegfried believes it's the right or only way, he will do everything he can to see it through. Even if it means he dies in the process.
» He refuses to see himself beyond what he did in his death. The tragedy caused by him he fully takes the blame for, and is too stubborn to see past it.
» If he is loyal to someone or something, it's difficult to change his mind about them. They could be a traitor, or something that could end terribly. Until he views it for himself or experiences it firsthand, he does not budge on his views.
» Siegfried believes that his burdens are his own, and convincing him that others are here to help is difficult. It isn't that he doesn't trust them, it's merely his view that he'd rather not trouble anyone else with his problems.
Overly Sacrificing.
» He doesn't know the meaning of loving himself. To put it simply, Siegfried is a hero who doesn't know how to say "no" to someone. Help fend off bandits? Yes. Protect a village? Yes. Kill a dragon? Also yes. If it was achievable, he did it.
» Siegfried fully believes that as a hero, he must give everything he is in order to make others happy. Oftentimes this ends up with others worrying about him or distressing them when he's only trying to help.
» He will put himself consistently in danger if it means someone else will be safe.
» Any consideration for his own well-being is lost when another person needs help. It could be a suicidal mission, and he would still go if it meant someone would be happy and able to continue living. If it is his choice, then he will not hesitate.
» Most of his actions are instinctual- and most of them tend to put him in harm's way or cause him injury if it comes to it. Siegfried is not one who does things in halves; either he goes all in or avoids the situation entirely. The latter is incredibly rare.
Low Self-Worth.
» This is his largest and most well known trait for the entire series. A man who is convinced he is not a good person because of his tragedy, Siegfried spends most of his time either apologizing for everything (even things that make no sense as to why he apologized) or making himself smaller compared to everyone else. Regardless of his triumphs, he cannot see the good in himself.
» High standards are always expected of heroes and those that dedicate themselves to others, and it was no different for Siegfried. His kindness and concern for others was so great that it swallowed him whole and led him to kill himself. He can only see himself as a coward for his death, and that he could not live up to the standards even he himself wished for.
» Because of this, he does not value his own life. While survival is still instinct to him, if he was given a choice to sacrifice himself for someone else, even a complete stranger? He'd do it. He has no consideration when it comes to self-preservation.
» He regards most of his desires to live as he wants as "selfish," and does not think he deserves most of what he wants. Even if it is a simple desire- "I wish to be a hero of justice" - Siegfried can only see it as him focusing on something that isn't allowing him to be a hero.
» To put it simply; he is a man without happiness, without pride, without a spine- but does not see it as such. He doesn't mind continuing as he has, as he feels that's the proper way he should be.
CRAU: While in Agoge, Siegfried faced the challenge of undermining himself and also trying to figure out what his beliefs were in the fixing of the timelines. In Gallipoli, Siegfried began to understand his need for a Master and that his own desires could not be fulfilled if he died. He also began to unknowingly lead others when shit went sideways. However, in Jhasch, his wariness of trying not to be eaten due to his status led to a lot of internal indecisiveness, as he didn't like how he had to present himself as this uncaring, cruel soldier, but needed to do so to survive and not immediately be eaten by the spider people there.
In Duplicity, while he made new friends and people to work with, the city itself further hammered in his wariness to immediately trust, most notably due to the incident at Fort Harmony. He is in a constant internal conflict- his heart wishes for him to continue to care for everyone he meets, but he cannot find it as easy to do so anymore.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Spirit form - Like all Servants, Siegfried has the ability to go into a spirit form and follow his Master around without being seen. Likewise, he can travel through walls in this form, but cannot carry anything physical with him at any point.
Incredible swordsmanship - As a Saber class, his sword skills are unparalleled, as are many others who are in the same class. His skill is legendary with blades, though his forte lies in greatswords.
Enhanced strength and speed - Most Servants have the ability to lift beyond average in weight and be exceptionally agile. As a Saber, Siegfried excels in both areas.
Enhanced endurance - Because of his legend, he bathed in dragon blood and became immortal. He can last far longer than any soldier on the battlefield and still remain standing even after being hit with surely fatal attacks. If given enough time and mana, he can even heal himself completely, and keep going again.
Flight - Being half-dragon, he's able to lift himself off the ground to high heights and carry someone else around with him with relative ease.
Use of tail - Despite his tail being his "tell," he can consciously use it as a weapon or as a makeshift limb if he finds it necessary. It comes in handy for him in a pinch.
Exceptional willpower - Though not an ability or a power, per se, it's important to note the strength of Siegfried's will. Like many other Servants, he's been bound to a Grail War before through command seals- spells that hold a Master's reign over the Servant they summon. However, unlike many Servants, if the command given to him goes against what he believes, Siegfried will refuse to do the command until he breaks it. This is incredibly rare, as most Servants, even in all their magnificence, cannot go against a command given by their Master.
Noble Phantasms
» Balmung. Anti-Army. A giant wave of blue energy that comes from his greatsword, Siegfried uses Balmung as his only offensive Noble Phantasm. It is capable of causing high damage if crashing against another Noble Phantasm, and was used as a weapon to eradicate entire armies. Since Siegfried is passive, he often doesn't use his Noble Phantasm unless he feels it's necessary.
» Armor of Fafnir. Passive. Legend states that after Siegfried had slain Fafnir, the legendary evil dragon, he drank the dragon's blood and also bathed in it. Every part of him was then covered, save for a lime tree leaf on his back, and his skin became as hard as a dragon's scales. This Noble Phantasm is always active, and should he be attacked, the attack will either leave a strike on him or it won't. For any attacks rank B+ or below, he will not take damage. For any attacks A- or higher, he will- but his Armor of Fafnir will halve any incoming damage to him so long as he stands. It is an incredible mana sink and requires a mage with a tone of reserves, as the Noble Phantasm also allows him to recover from damage while in battle.
TL;DR = He can nerf damage to himself either fully or in halves, depending on the rank of his opponent. Also, he consistently heals himself so long as his Master has the mana to spare. If struck on his back at any point, Siegfried will die.
» Das Rheingold. Passive. As one who willingly took the Rheingold treasure in an effort to keep it out of the hands of man, Siegfried is plagued with tragedy. A cursed pile of gold, the Rheingold states that any owner who claims it shall carry the burden of tragedy for the rest of their days. It also has a unique curse that belongs to Siegfried- whatever timeline he comes to, wherever he is summoned, he will eventually confront Fafnir once more, and vice versa. He and Fafnir are to cross paths repeatedly until the end of time.

((Siegfried's arrival into Prismatica and his contemplations))
[The hardest part for him is realizing that this isn't home, again.
He's been through this now twice- the first, with COST and making sure time was righted. He remembers it vaguely, the fuzziness of some faces flitting in and out, while other moments ring through loud and clear. Has it really been over two years since that happened? How he returned to the Greater Holy Grail War, knowing his death was imminent, and eventually arriving back in Chaldea to assist humanity once again? It seems shorter and longer all at the same time. Not to mention that he's no longer without his own differences- having worked with Ritsuka and all they've gone through, he's now half-dragon. It gave him the power necessary to fight and protect, but he had always doubted about his nature since then.
What kind of dragonslayer is he if he himself is part of the very thing he kills?
The second time he'd been pulled, it was different. It wasn't by choice. He had no say before he found himself awaken before two doors in a white room, asked a single question, and was forced to choose. Perhaps he was lucky; most people consider being a Dominant as the equivalent of being rich. But for him, it also meant he had to consider anyone else besides other Dominants as lower, unequal, and for him to essentially "groom" into their supposed Submissive role. The mere thought of it made him sick. Duplicity pushed him well beyond his comfort, imposed sex upon him when he had no interest in anything of the sort, and kept him and everyone else there in captivity. They could live their lives, but they were pushed into roles they had no say about; and as resent grew and eventual retaliation, the city punished everyone instead of picking out those who refused to go against LIES corporation in the underground. Fort Harmony was not an experience he wanted to repeat.
Siegfried's attention is interrupted as one of the Prismals gently places a hand on his arm, guiding him back towards the group as they leave the caves. He blinks, tail swaying widely, scales vivid under the colors of the crystal lights.]
Ah, sorry. I didn't mean to cause you trouble. [She tells him it's no issue, and that she's happy to help. He exhales, looking around even as they walk.] How far is it until we reach our destination?
[Not long now, he's told. Something sits in his stomach like a weight- perhaps it's anxiety, or fear, or even worse, an understanding of loneliness. He doesn't know whether or not others from Duplicity have come here, or others from even before then. He doesn't know if it's just simply him, a Servant among a multitude of faces he doesn't know, doesn't recognize. Can he protect whoever he helps? Is this how he's meant to be tested as a hero?
'Do you want to protect them' is what you should be asking yourself, Siegfried. From in the back of his mind, he can hear his dragon stretch, almost as if it's woken up again, just as he has. It's a frustrating realization- that even here, he still has this other side of himself that he feels is no better than a monster. A sigh, and he pushes the words out of his mind. He'll figure out what to do later, right now he needs to get his bearings and understand how this whole world works first.
It's not until he goes through the doors of the elevator and actually sees the city itself before him, stopping where he is to simply stare at everything. It's... far more beautiful than he thought, and something in it strikes him with a familiar pang to home.
Well then, maybe... his heart opens just a little and bears its scars, and Siegfried smiles gently. Maybe it won't be as difficult as before.]
