CHARACTER
NAME: Siegfried, aka Saber of Black
CANON: fate/ series (more specifically fate/Apocrypha, though his original hails from the Nibelungenlied)
AGE: Mentally he's.... centuries old????? Possibly? Physically no more than late 20s to early 30s.
CANON POINT: Just before going off to find homunculus!Sieg with his Master
HISTORY: History/lore is here, the important part is his Apocrypha section (it's small, honestly) and his personality
PERSONALITY: Most people would expect a Saber to be strong in both battle and their opinions. Most people would expect a Saber to know exactly where they stand in the Grail War, and to follow their Master without question. Most people would expect a Saber to be headstrong, and not doubt themselves for what they do.
And it's true- most Sabers carry these traits; but Siegfried, as a Saber, is a unique case in his personality and how he views himself compared to the world.
For the most part, Siegfried is as many people see him; a battle-hardened warrior who is incredibly knowledgeable in war and all aspects of battle. However, beneath this facade is a man who truly struggles to understand what he wants in life, and how he can achieve it. While one would expect a great hero to know what he wants and what he fights for, in Siegfried's case, his own motives have become muddled over the years due to his inability to refuse helping others. If he was told "help me win this country," he did it. No request was too small for a man who was immortal. "Help me claim this woman as my wife." "Help me defeat this monster." Buried with so many requests for help and want, Siegfried lost sight of what he originally picked up a sword for, as well as to who he was as a person.
Along with the loss of his own self, Siegfried suffers from the curse of the Rheingold, a great and terrible treasure that brings tragedy to anyone who holds it. Thus, tragedy always follows after him, regardless of where he goes, and it can range from something minimal to something on a completely colossal scale. Seeing all the misery that happens because of him and because of what he does, regardless if it was with good intent, has given the hero very little self-esteem. Most of the time he'll apologize for not being good at fighting, he'll apologize for not being comfortable with something, he'll poorly explain his thoughts and apologize for not making sense, etc. He can easily speak as if he's confident, but in reality he doubts much about himself and what he's even capable of. Having made choices that almost led to war and then to further tragedy upon his death, Siegfried doesn't believe himself to be the capable legend that so many speak of in Germanic lore.
(In reality, he is an incredible fighter, one of the better Sabers to summon in Fate's canon, and a good person in general. He, unfortunately, can never see it.)
Still, beneath this self-doubt and his own questioning of who he actually is, Siegfried is still a kind and gentle man. Even as a human, he put other's needs before his own, oftentimes stating that if they were pleased in the end, so was he. He was (and still is) selfless in how he helps people, ignoring the consequences in favor of making sure they were happy with what they wanted. Despite having an emptiness in his heart that could never filled, he was glad to aid others and give them his word as a knight to assist them in whatever way he could. In this way, people came to trust him as an honest person; as someone who was reliable and could be counted on to do whatever was asked of him. Though his actions in helping others eventually led to his own suicide, Siegfried does not regret helping the people in whatever way he can.
There is also his unwavering desire to be a hero of justice. As a Heroic Spirit, all he wants is to do actions that would exemplify this, as well as benefit others. To see what is right and just and follows along a path that is used for good- that is the way he wishes to live and to be used in a Holy Grail War. Many Servants wish for something from the Grail if they were to win it- but Siegfried is one of the few who has no wish for it, and doesn't even desire it should the victory go to him. Everything he wants can be attained without its help, and he cannot be convinced otherwise.
In general, Siegfried is a spirit who simply longs to do what is right, but is plagued by tragedy and a terrible lack of self-worth. A hero in every sense of the word, he believes he isn't as great as his legend says he is, and cannot see the good in all he does.
POWERS:
Siegfried is classified as a Saber class for his Heroic Spirit form. Sabers are thought to be one of the strongest classes and are usually reserved those with the sword who face battle head on in a frontal assault. Siegfried's powers are based on a ranking system within the Fate series as well as the lore that is his legend.
Strength = B+ • His strength is above average compared to many Servants, but it's not anything amazingly incredible. It allows him to easily carry his greatsword and swing it with no problem, not to mention take on armies of men with ease.
His nickname in lore is "the man who took on thousands" for a good reason. Also, he killed a legendary dragon who was a grade-A asshole (Fafnir's a dick, text it).
Endurance = A • Because he went and bathed in dragon's blood and also drank it, Siegfried's skin is as tough as a dragon's hide. His only open area of weakness is a spot on his back, where a leaf from a lime tree fell while he bathed. If struck there, it would take an incredible amount of healing to make sure he wouldn't die.
He can take incredible amounts of damage that will only come up as shallow cuts on his body, and anything a B+ rank or below will not be able to mortally wound him by physical damage alone. He can also fight for long periods of time without seeming to need any kind of rest or sustenance to keep him going.
Agility = B • Of the Saber class, he does decently well with speed, but lacks anything that would put him at an advantage over other Servants who have a better rating. He can keep up easily with most opponents without exhausting himself or overdoing his limits.
MP = C • Sabers are often Servants who boast strong attributes in every area except for magic. In this case, he's about average in ranking, meaning anything complicated in its spell/incantation can have a very good advantage over him, if casted. He has nothing to protect himself from a powerful/charged spell.
Luck = E • Due to the Rheingold's curse, Siegfried's luck will always be poor, and tragedy will follow him wherever he goes. Thus, his luck is the lowest rank possible.
Noble Phantasm = A+ • A Noble Phantasm is a Heroic Spirit's signature move, the one action they take that actually reveals who they are beyond the class name that's given to them upon their summoning. Most Noble Phantasms vary in what they do as well as what damage they can create, ranging from a relatively small ultimate that curses enemies with poison and stuns them, to large and incredibly devastating attacks that level buildings and decimate anything around them.
Siegfried has two Noble Phantasms- Balmung and The Rheingold. While Balmung is the only damaging Noble Phantasm of the two, able to cause massive destruction in a wide area when he activates it, the Rheingold has a much more passive approach. Capable of causing every kind of tragedy imaginable, it promises that the one who claims it will always carry tragedy with them wherever they go. To add onto this, the Rheingold is special in Siegfried's case- whenever he is summoned, eventually the legendary dragon Fafnir will arrive as well (whether physically or symbolically, he will appear somewhere). The curse of this Noble Phantasm goes both ways- if Fafnir were to be summoned first, Siegfried will follow after.
Siegfried is also one of the few Servants able to ignore Command Spells if they go against his ideals. Command Spells are given to a Master in order for them to hold control over the Servant they have summoned, and each Master may only have three. A Servant cannot go against a Command Spell if one is given to them, usually. For Siegfried to be able to ignore these means he has an incredible sense of willpower (not to mention how he ignored the command and then punched his Master's lights out).

MISC
PLANS: Siegfried is, first and foremost, a helper. He lives to give for others. So putting him in a place that will consistently ask of him fits his ideal of "willing to help others." Not to mention, there will obviously be the moral question of "is this right" or "is this just," the massive wish he has while living this second life- to be a hero of justice, one needs to be able to do those things and do them without fear of the consequences. He's also desperately in need of friends and a way to grow- his lack of self-worth is a really demoralizing thing and I would love to see others begin to slowly help him learn that not everything is his fault, and grow again in his confidence.
ITEM: Balmung, his greatsword
CHARACTER @ID SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to give me one, I'm running out of juice for this and my brain has splattered itself against a wall for creativity.
HOW DID YOUR CHARACTER JOIN COST? Someone within the Yggdmillenia fortress managed to find him and asked him to assist (though we don't often see him away from his Master's side, I'm sure it happened once in a while). Being the hero that he is, he'd agree to it after slightly hesitating about leaving his Master behind. If it saves the world and keeps history the same? Yes, he'll help, and without question.
